  • Mixing Bowls – for combining dry and wet ingredients
  • Hand Mixer or Stand Mixer – to easily combine ingredients to the right consistency
  • 9x13-inch Baking Pan or Two 9-inch Round Cake Pans – for baking the cake

Zutaten

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk or substitute with 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot brewed coffee
  • 1 cup boiling water

Anleitungen

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your baking pan (9x13-inch or two 9-inch round cake pans).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir together until well combined.
  • Add the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix using a hand or stand mixer on medium speed until smooth and well combined (about 2 minutes). The batter will be slightly runny.
  • Pour in the hot brewed coffee and boiling water, mixing on low speed until fully incorporated. The batter will be very thin.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan(s). Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, frost with your preferred frosting or a simple dusting of powdered sugar.

Notizen

The coffee intensifies the chocolate flavor but doesn’t make the cake taste like coffee. It’s a subtle enhancement.
You can use a different frosting, such as chocolate buttercream, cream cheese frosting, or whipped cream.
If you need a gluten-free option, use a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.
Make sure the cake cools completely before frosting to prevent melting the frosting.
